Intern Daniel Gives Tips on Back Pain

Hey everyone! My name is Daniel and I am a chiropractic intern at Inver Grove Chiropractic. Like many of you, I suffer from chronic low back pain. So today I want to give you a little bit of information about what you can do to help keep your spine nice and healthy. First and foremost is posture, if you are sitting slumped all day, you are going to feel sore by the end of the day, no matter what you do. Sitting up properly and having good ergonomics at home, work (and school!) can go a long way to helping you feel better.

The two most common ways to injure your back, when lifting or moving around, happen when you bend at the waist and twist around your spine. When lifting or bending over, make sure to bend at the knees as much as possible. One great tip, that I have been giving people training in our new Functional Fitness Center, is to keep your head up and your eyes on the horizon since your body will go where your eyes lead them.

And lastly, for your spine’s health, make sure you are keeping it moving. This can mean taking little breaks throughout the day to stretch or even just getting up and walking around a bit. The discs in your spine have a very poor blood supply and as such, they require your body to squish and stretch to move fluid in and out of them. Without this they begin to shrink and weaken, ultimately, they could end up herniating (which is not a fun experience!). That’s all I’ve got for you, but if you have any questions, or if would like to know more, please feel free to chat with me next time you are in the office.
