Celebration Survival Strategies

The team at Inver Grove Chiropractic has volunteered to be a “Beta” test group for our new wellness program which you will hear more about in the next month or so. At the time of this blog post, we are just starting our 2nd of eight weeks. That puts us smack in the middle of the Holiday celebration season. Needless to say, this puts an extra layer of pressure on all of us during a time of year that blesses us with joy and abundance, hassles and headaches.

So far, it has been a fantastic experience participating in this wellness program with an amazing group of supportive co-workers. Although we each have our own path, we have been able to share the struggles and successes as we move through the program. So, I thought it appropriate to share some of the strategies that we have collected, so far, on how to not only survive but maybe even thrive this Celebration Season.

  • Gratitude: Connect with the positive! Find something to be grateful for every day—great or small, this practice helps to affirm a positive attitude. Keep the “reasons why” close at hand. They will remind us of the benefits of staying on course.
  • Exercise: Early and often! Especially on the day of a celebration, get a good workout in. The pride we feel in the accomplishment will help lift spirits and help keep us on track. It will also help burn some of those “celebration calories!”
  • Choose Wisely: Create a plan of attack! Most parties with buffets will have lots of choices available. If I am too hungry, my brain switches into gobble mode, and good sense goes out the window. My plan is to fill up on low GI veggies and lean proteins, with the hope that the empty calorie snacks and sweets are less appetizing.
  • Celebrate: Above all, we need to be mindful of the fleeting nature of this moment in time. Let’s commit to being kind; to our loved ones, the strangers we meet, and especially to ourselves. Going through this program during the holidays is a challenge. Success looks different for everyone so, if you make it through the holidays and meet every goal, bravo. If the celebration season is punctuated by slips, slides, or full on flops, well congratulations, you are human!
