Fatty Acid supplementation has become widely accepted for supplementation. So much so that one can find fish oil at nearly every supermarket, and in most cases, for fifty cents a pill. Fish Oil has become a buzz word highlighted on all of America’s favorite T.V shows: Dr. Oz, The Doctors, etc. What most of us don’t know is what fatty acids should we be taking, and why shouldn’t we just go pay ten dollars at the local Walmart for 100 capsules.

There is a lot more “fat” in the body than what we all see in the mirror as every cell in our body has a membrane, or shell, made out of fatty acids (the smallest unit of fat). This means that we actually need fat; well good fat, to not only survive but thrive. There are three types of fatty acids that our bodies utilize to line our cell membranes with. These are called Omega 3, Omega 6, and Omega 9 fatty acids. These acids are also called essential fatty acids meaning that we must consume them opposed to our body being able to create them. There is a reason for why they are named Omega 3, 6, and 9, but let’s just focus on what they mean to our body. Omega 6 is pro-inflammatory 3, and 9 are anti-inflammatory. This correlates to what lines our cells and in turn if our cells are prone to inflammation or fighting inflammation. Basic math says all we have to do is eat more Omega 6, and 9 fats relative to Omega 3s. Basic studies show that the instead of having a ratio of 4:1 Omega 6, and 9 to Omega 3; the average American has a ratio of 15:1 – 17:1. This is due to the large amounts of processed vegetable oils in the American diet that has created an increase in added dietary fat in the American diet of nearly 45 pounds since the end of WWII.

So if we can’t eat a proper ratio of fats why can’t we just supplement the good oils so that we don’t have to change our diet? Only half true. Eating a less inflammatory diet will do wonders for the daily aches and pains, yet we still need to supplement. The unfortunate thing that the two most beneficial fatty acids to take Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) are extremely unstable and, just like food that is left out, can spoil quickly. This is compounded by the fact that about supplementation is that is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) meaning that there is no one watching to ensure that the generic brand fish oils are being extracted, prepared, and stored properly. So really what you’re buying when you get the $9.99 dollar pills at Target is rancid spoiled fish fat. Not all supplements are created equally, so come in and talk with Dr. Ross, and Dr. Amy about the processes guaranteed Metagenics EPA and DHA essential oils are fresh, and more importantly, can help you feel better.
